| Melaka Aim To Achieve High Income Status Soon |

MELAKA, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Melaka hope to achieve state with high income status within the next decade, by using advancement in information technology and biotechnology, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
He urged the people of Melaka to increase productivity, be creative and focus on the economy, based on knowledge.
"For Melaka to advance and reach the high income status, we must venture deeply into information technology, biotechnology, halal industry and high end tourism," he told reporters at a ceremony that was held to commemorate his one decade leadership as Melaka Chief Minister.Today, marked the 10th year since Mohd Ali took oath as the Melaka Menteri Besar from Datuk Abu Zahar Isnin, after the 1999 general election.
He added that Melaka must also emerge as an industrialized state with focus on manufacturing rather than being just consumers.
"Melaka has received 40.1 million tourist from 1999 to 2008, an increase of 20 percent every year with 73.3 percent being local tourist and the remaining 26.7 percent from abroad.
"Our hope is to attract 8.2 million tourists next year who stay on an average of 2.5 days, compared with 7.4 million tourists received this year," said Mohd Ali who also received an award from a local magazine for his contributions to the Tourism Industry in the country. |
